Friday Travels To Japan...!

Here is a great idea from Japan. Not only is it pretty, but it's practical as well!

I'm thinking this could be just the thing for anyone looking to decorate their house and grow some extra food in the process!

A Self-Contained Food System Disguised As Corporate Art

A Japanese retail company has developed an aquaponics system that’s being used as an art piece in hospitals and nursing homes. The system is capable of growing fish as well as plants; the nitrate waste from the fish is used as fertilizer by the plants. At the same time, the plants filter and clean the water, which is then piped back into the fish tank— in exactly the same way a natural system (such as a pond) would work. Although it doesn’t create energy, the system doesn’t consume any either.

Large-scale systems like this are also being developed to help create renewable food sources in areas of the world that don’t have a lot of water. Since the water cycles continuously through the system, desert regions with limited rainfall can use it as a viable means of year-round food production.

Coffee on the patio this morning! The foundation guys are done and gone, the temps are going up, and the sun is shining! Life is good!

Starting to see a lot of this now - our local rural extension has been using this for years. (without the fish). They also teach classes on how to do it. It can be made any size and used year round if indoors so there is food and veggies even in the winter months.
Glad the foundation work is finished. Lucky to be outside - it's 24 here and windy. It's a good day for old fashioned windmill cookies. I'll bring a big box for all to enjoy!

That is so cool, learning to build self-sustainable projects like this are great. I remember years ago, reading a book called FARMERS OF 40 CENTURIES (or something like that) which detailed how Chinese farmers were able to build pond systems on hillside terraces which kept their families fed, using small amounts of resources that worked together much lie the above. Empty the pond into another, using the fish fertilizer at pond bottom for their crops - cool!

An acquaintance is going to start employing aquaponics. It'll be interesting to see the results.

What a great idea; I could use something like that, especially since I love home grown foods. Have a great weekend. Happy to hear the foundation guys are gone and the sun is shining.

Good to hear they are done. Now I guess the clean up is in order. Is it a big mess to clean?

Well less enjoy some patio time I'll take a refill please.

The foundation work went zipping fast, didn't it? Fish pond water is great on the garden. Come spring I'll make another raid on daughter's pond.

Hey Phyllis...
I like the idea that these are being used for decorations in commercial buildings! Seems that it would work fine in homes as well!

I'm glad to see the sunshine here, and thank goodness the wind is not bad at all!

Thanks for dropping by today!

Hey Anon 7:35...
We could learn a lot from some of our ancient ancestors, I believe!

I really appreciate you coming over today!

Hey Momlady...
You'll have to keep us posted on his results! I like the whole concept!

Thanks for coming over this morning!

Hey Linda...
Probably wouldn't take much to build one and seems like it would be worth the trouble!

Nothing like stuff right from the garden!

Thanks for the visit today!

Hey Jo...
Now I have the carpet guys and the plumber coming today. Getting the carpet back down is first so that I can move all the furniture back in place. The plumber is so I can make sure that no pipes are leaking under the foundation after raising the slab.l

I did have the shower in the hall bath start to leak a bit, so that's the main reason for the plumber! Gotta have all this done now 'cause later would be too late!

Thanks, sweetie, for coming by today!

Hey Sixbears...
You would think that it should catch on easily, wouldn't you?

Thanks for the visit today!

Hey Sissy...
Three days from start to finish, as far as the foundation work went!

Odds and ends won't take long! I hope!

Thanks for the visit this morning!
