Sunday Insanity...!!

I agree that Sunday is normally a day of rest, so instead of talking business I thought I would share this little bit of craziness with you, my friends. So grab a fresh cup and enjoy this offering of absolutely useless bits of trivia, OK?

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase......... "goodnight, sleep tight."

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month .... which we know today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down."

It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's"

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

  1. Actually, there are people who are able to lick their own elbow. It was even shown in one of the episodes of "Mythbusters" if I'm not mistaken. :-) But the statement keeps going on 'round the net anyway. :-)

  2. Hey sinip...I didn't know that! But then, there's a lot I don't know in this world...and I watch Mythbusters all the time! Great show, in my opinion !

    I have never tried to lick my elbow, so I can't vouch for it one way or another.

  3. Yes great show indeed! Didn't see a lot of episodes though, because it used to be aired at the time when I was returning from my work (while I was working) but the most impressive one I saw was when they tried to check the myth of the guys who allegedly got catapulted themselves from the Mexican border into the USA using mattress and some elastic rubber mounted on top of the truck parked next to the fence. To what length those mythbusters went to check every single possibility was simply amazing to watch. :-)

  4. sinip...I think it's safe to say that these guys go to extraordinary lengths to show the science of what will and will not work on certain myths. I have learned a lot from watching this show. and find it a great form of entertainment!
