Saturday Is Donut Day...!

It's really not donut Saturday, but I like them anytime and this seemed as good a time as any!

Here is a little history about donuts that you may not know. Heck, I didn't even know that donuts had a history of their own! Kinda cool, actually!

Mysterious History of Donuts

Fascinating Fact: No one really knows when donuts were invented or who invented them.

Donuts (doughnuts in UK English), were originally made as a long twist of dough – not in the ring form that is most common these days. It was also common in England for donuts to be made in a ball shape and injected with Jam after they were cooked – this is still very common. Both methods of cooking involve no human intervention as the ball and twist will turn itself over when the underside is cooked. The ring donut common to America just seemed to appear – but one Hansen Gregory, an American, claimed to have invented it in 1847 when he was traveling on a steam boat; he was not satisfied with the texture of the center of the donut so he pressed a hole in the center with the ship’s pepper box.

I got this information off of Listverse! If you want to see some really good list about all things, give them a visit!

Coffee on the patio this morning and we will share some...you guessed it, donuts!

  1. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of donuts, but I do occasionally eat one. But I prefer the ones with jam in the middle :-)

I remember as a kid eating them when travelling fun-fairs came to where I lived. I always thought they were some kind of gypsy bun since it always were gypsies having those fun-fairs.
But later on I realized that my grandmother also often made them :-)

    Have a great day!

  2. Hey Christer...
I have to say that I like them all! I do like the filled ones pretty good, though.

Never heard about the gypsy thing. Bet the ones your grandmother made were good!

    Thanks for coming by today!

When we were kids, my Mom would take us to the bakery every Sunday after church. We were each allowed one donut. It was a special treat back then! (Whatever happened to all the neighborhood bakeries?)
It's been years since I had any, so save two powdered jelly donuts for me!

  4. I don't eat them anymore, but that doesn't mean I'm not tempted. Used to love the old fashioned. When I was a kid my friend's mother made donuts so good I've yet to find their equal. Happy memories.

  6. I love donuts but they really don't care much for me.

Yes Phyllis what happened to the local bakery? When I was a kid living in NJ there was a bakery on the corner of our street. You could smell that fresh baked bread early every morning and if need be during the later morning.

Since I can't eat donuts mind if I bring some bagels?

  7. Hey Phyllis...
Isn't it funny how some smells from our childhood can trigger a lot of memories?

I can still smell the big commercial bread bakery we used to drive by. Man, that smell was soooo good!

As far as the neighborhood bakery, like so many other icons of the older neighborhoods, they seem to be pretty much gone! Sad!

Thanks for coming over, my friend!

    Hey Sixbears...
I don't eat as many as I used to, but I am still tempted, like you say!

I like to get some donuts "holes" once in a while and eat them! Pretty good snack!

Once you start on them, it's hard to find a stopping point!

Thanks, my friend, for coming by this morning!

    Hey Momlady...
Sorry, I forgot you were on a diet! Guess I'll have to eat your share, just to remove the temptation!

See what a nice guy I am?

Thanks for coming over this morning, lady!

    Hey JoJo...
Bagels would be fine. I don't care for them as much, but I'm sure someone does!

Besides, it's the thought that counts!

Thanks, sweetie, for the visit today!

  8. I'll be honest. I was drawn to this blog by the doughnut post. Here's mine from a few years ago: http://mercurio20.blogspot.com/2008/10/doughnuts.html

    Great blog!

  9. Hey Jim...
For whatever reason you were drawn here, you are always welcome!

Pull up a chair here on the patio and I'll get another cup. We always have room for a new friend!

Read your post and I have to say, I think you would have fun comparing the local offering to the Krispy Kreams.

Thanks so much for coming by today!

  11. Hey Linda...
Unfortunately I know exactly what you mean!

I just don't worry about it anymore. I'd rather have the donuts than the worry!

    Thanks for dropping in today!

  12. Wow...my husband loves donuts with a passion. When he would run to the grocery store for me he would forget to clean up the evidence. Unfortunately, the evidence surrounded his mouth and he had been told by the Dr. to stop. Very sneaky man. lol

  13. Hey JMD...
Wow! Poor guy busted by the "donut mouth!"

I sure can feel for him! I'm pretty fond of them as well!

    Thanks for the visit today!
