I Had A Drug Problem...!
I got this from someone and thought it was too good not to pass on.
There's a lot of truth in this piece...!
I had a drug problem when I was young: I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather
I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher. Or if I didn’t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me. I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profane four letter word. I was drug out to pull weeds in mom’s garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of dad’s fields.
I was drug to the homes of family, friends, and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline or chop some fire wood. And if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the wood shed.
Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America might be a better place today.
Probably wouldn't hurt to have some of this kind of problem today. Forget about being politically correct. Forget about letting someone else dictate how you discipline your children. Forget about what the rest of your family and friends have to say about making your kids do something they don't want to do!
You know what's right! You know what's correct! You know what needs to be done...so just do it! Most of the time, our children pass on to their children the values they learned as youngsters.
Maybe it's time to be "old fashioned" again!
Now, my friends, let's get some fresh coffee and sit outside for a bit!
Great post, HermitJim. It seems we could use a whole lot of this kind of "drugging" these days.
ReplyDeleteHey Coyote...
ReplyDeleteOne thing for certain...it sure wouldn't hurt!
Thanks for coming by today, my friend!
Hello HermitJim,
ReplyDeleteExcellent post and I agree with your point of view 100%. I’m from what used to be called a ‘working class’ background, though I’m told that I now live in a classless society, and was brought up with what could only be described as a black and white set of morals. Now in my mid forties, so far I’ve never taken a human life, never stolen and lied only when it caused less harm than the truth. I’ve never been a burden on the state having worked since leaving school. I’ve never cheated on my wife (why would I have married her if I did not love her?). I’m no angel and have many faults but I do the best that I can and I don’t have too a bad life. But, and here’s the rub, I increasingly find myself and my values looked upon with scorn and sometimes derision in this politically correct society here in the UK while others are pitied for their ‘weaknesses’, you know the type, the drug users, the thieves, the murderers etc. Perhaps a return to this type of ‘drugging’ wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.
Regards,
John
I think we need a resurgence of this kind of drug. It might be just the right prescription for some of the idiotic behavior we see around us. Especially that old fashioned trip to the woodshed. Today's kids need a refresher course. Great post Jim.
ReplyDeleteI've seen that one before, but it certainly bears repeating / reposting. Great logic there. Spare the Rod - spoil the child, bah humbug!
ReplyDeleteYesterday, one of my coworkers had a conversation with a friend who confided his 19 year old son was spoiled rotten. His latest tiff - Daddy wouldn't buy a pair of blue jeans (True Religion). Cost - about $275. For a pair of bleeping jeans, you have to be kidding me! We thought he was joking, but nope - google True Religion jeans and it'll pop right up. Just plain crazy.
Can't see how Mom and Pop stores are dying, while companies selling jeans like this are still afloat. Must be funny money laundering going on there.
Mr. Hermit, sir.....I too, was "drug" when young and hope I instilled values in my children. So far so good. (I still get an 'itch' when men don't take their hats off inside.)
ReplyDeleteGood morning Jim;
ReplyDeleteMy children received the same "Drugs" I did. Your parents must have been related to mine. Oh that's right...ALL parents of that era were related. That's why my neighbors could use me as their own.
One of the problems today is neighbors don't know each other, and kids are raised by day care centers.
Damn I don't want to start to rant.
I'm just happy that my children have raised my grandchildren with my values. Guess I did a pretty good job with them.
See Ya
I can't remember the exact quotes, but I do know it's related in the Bible about raising children in the ways you want them to go.We need to take back the right ways, beginning with our kids.
ReplyDeleteYeOldFurt
Good Morning My Special One, great post. It is a shame to go to a store and hear these kids screaming like they are being murdered because they want something. I want to slap there parents because they raised them this way. But I guess I have a very evil look cause thats all I have to do is give them that look and they shut up right quick. We didn't get away with much and niether did my kids. I could take them anywhere.
ReplyDeleteUh oh...reckon mine'll have that same drug problem...since they get drug to lots of places they don't want to be!
ReplyDeleteExcellent my friend, excellent.
Hey John...
ReplyDeleteIt's getting harder and harder to live the right way, to abide by the rules, and stay true to our values. We are gradually being lead toward a society that is more concerned with not offending our enemies, than one that stands behind the principles that we were raised with.
Like the good book says "To thy own self be true!"
Thanks for coming by today!
Hey Rae...
The sad part is that the kids mostly reflect what was taught to them , mostly by example. Somewhere we have to find a way to break this cycle and get back to the core values we once had!
I don'tknow what the answer is...sometimes I don't even understand the question!
Thank you so much for coming by today!
Hey Anon 7:37...
Good example of what I was talking about! I remember once my dad and I had a discussion about a certain type of shoe I wanted, and he didn't like! He said, "As long as I buy your clothes, you'll wear what I buy! If you don't like it, get a job and buy your own!"
I got a job and discovered very quickly how fast my wants began to match my paycheck and not my friends idea of what I should have!
Nothing like a real life attitude adjustment, for sure!
Hey, I appreciate you coming by today!
Hey Momlady...
Always good to know that the end product of our training is someone to be proud of and not ashamed or afraid of!
From what I've seen, you did a good job!
Thanks, my friend, for coming by!
Hey Tony...
Guess we can say that the "old school" was our school! Didn't seem to hurt us a bit, did it?
We sure could use some of the old ways in society today!
Thanks for coming by, buddy!
Hey YOF...
How right you are, my friend! How right you are! Let's just hope it's not too late!
Thaks for dropping by, my man!
Hey JoJo...
I can remember that "mom look" from when I was a kid! It was not what you wanted to see for sure!
But it did work, mainly because we knew what was next if we kept on!
Hey, thanks for coming over, sweetie!
Hey Momma...
ReplyDeleteI'll bet that they will pass it on to their children as well! Certainly not a bad thing to pass on!
Keep on doing it the way you are, my friend!
Thanks so much for coming by!
I too was drugged this way all during my childhood - despite the fact that both my parents did NOT live this way. So I learned about irony and "do what I say, not what I do."
ReplyDeleteSadly, if we raised our kids this way today we'd find ourselves prosecuted for child abuse!
Hey Treesong...
ReplyDeleteSadly, you're right! We would indeed be indicted for child abuse! We have more latitude in how we raise our animals, than in how we raise our kids!
Now the government wants to control how we want to do everything, including raising our kids!
Maybe it's time for us to insist on putting prayer back in our schools, discipline back in our homes, and morality back in our government!
Like I said, maybe it's time to become a little old fashioned again!
I sure am glad you could come by today, Treesong!
More of those kind of drug problems would be quite ok I think :-) :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a great day now!
Christer.
Hey Christer...
ReplyDeleteI hve to admit that I think you are correct in saying more would be OK.
It wouldn't be popular, but if we don't do something soon, we may end up with a group of future leaders even worse that the ones we have today!
Hey, my friend, I do appreciate you coming by!
Hey, Mister Hermit, sir - I like to think of myself as modern-old-fashioned. I have the Blue Nowhere, and a blog, and indoor plumbing...but I have some old-fashioned ideas about behavior, mores, and decency...and I like to make things the old way, by hand, as often as I can.
ReplyDeleteModernity isn't a bad thing...but like everything in life, it should be something we consider carefully as we embrace it, and strive to balance with simplicity. Sadly, with every convenience we achieve, we seem to lose a little of our collective humanity.
And now, speaking of modern stuff - time for me to go out and hang lights on the house while the day is fine!
Shade and Sweetwater,
K
Hey K...
ReplyDeleteThat's as good way to express it as any, I reckon! Some of the modern things I can embrace fully (like the Blue Nowhere) but my ambition is to live without being dependent on the grid, city water, and the like.
We can never be totally self sufficient, but we can go a lot farther down that road than we are now!
Better get those lightes up, before the neighbors cat marks them again!
Thanks for coming by today!
AMEN!!!
ReplyDeleteHey Seth...
ReplyDeleteGlad you agree! I appreciate you coming by today, my friend!
