Sometimes there is a story that proves the old adage that "truth is stranger than fiction"!
I couldn't help but share this strange bit of history with you...if only because it's something just a tad different than our usual fare! Besides, everyone likes a good mystery...and a good love story, right?
Coral Castle
Location: Miami, Florida
Claim to Fame: Billy Idol’s 1986 hit “Sweet Sixteen” was a tribute to the Coral Castle and its creator, and the video was shot at the Castle.
About: Ed Leedskalnin spent 28 years secretly working alone, mostly at night, with just hand tools to move 1100 tons of coral to construct this monument to the woman who jilted him the night before their wedding. It remains a mystery how he accomplished the feat. Since no one ever witnessed the construction, some have speculated that Leedskalnin had supernatural powers. Leedskalnin himself claimed to know the secrets used to build the ancient Pyramids.
Coral Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and is now a museum listed under its original name of Rock Gate Park.
Now, wasn't that a pleasant change of pace? If nothing else, it may help to take our minds off the really nasty weather. That's a good thing, right?
Today in the kitchen, I got hot chocolate, coffee, and even some imported tea! When I say imported, I mean it came from all the way from across town! In Houston, that's the same as imported, ya know?
Cool story and history...I'll take hot chocolate :P
ReplyDeleteHey Ezrablu...
ReplyDeleteOne Hermit special hot chocolate coming up!
It's cold out there, so we better build a fire in the den. It's still pretty warm and cozy in the kitchen, though!
Hey, I appreciate you coming by this morning!
You and Nanny stay warm. Y'all aren't used to cold weather. I'd take some hot chocolate but have to have blood work done this morning so it will have to wait. Have a cozy day!
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing what a man can do when driven with enough desire and given the time. Would be nice to know how he did move those large pieces by himself.
ReplyDeleteNice story its amazing too.
ReplyDeleteNow you want to talk cold here in sunny Tucson its 10, I forgot to let the faucet drip so no water again. Oh well at least I have my supply and I replenished it the last time this happened. I would love to be in your cozy kitchen for coffee the more bodies the warmer we will be.
Jack went to visit this place years ago and he showed me a lot of pictures he had taken there. It is really something to see. I would love to know how that guy moved those stones.
ReplyDeleteOh! and I'll have hot chocolate too! :)
Hey Momlady...
ReplyDeleteSorry you can't share a cup with us this morning, but I can understand about the test and all!
I sure don't like those blood test and the fasting test!
Have a great day and thanks for dropping by today!
Hey Dizzy...
The old guy took all his secrets with him to the grave! Would really be interesting to know!
I saw a special on this place on the History channel once...pretty amazing!
Thanks for the visit!
Hey JoJo...
10 degrees? Man, that is cold! Still in the 20s here and that is cold enough for me!
Sorry you are without water, but I'm glad you could drop in today, sweetie!
Hey ER...
Certainly took his time building it up!
I hope you are staying warm enough, my friend!
Thanks for coming by today!

ReplyDeleteHave ol' Ed's book. It has some unusual concepts regarding physics and electro-magnetism. I don't think I'm ever really going to understand it.
ReplyDeleteEnglish was Ed's second language so he may not have had the words to accurately describe some things.
Put "Searle Effect" into your favorite search engine, Jim. It will blow your mind.
Amazin wut a guy can do when he's pissed at a woman lol.

Since Houston's bigger than Rhode Island, yes, tea from all the way across town IS imported!
ReplyDeleteHJ, we may be taking our next road trip to FL this spring and certainly will look this place up if it's on the route - simply amazing. Thanks for sharing and I will have hot chocolate, please. No snow or ice here, but I heard that Texas is getting some masty weather. Stay warm.
