I'm pretty much a cat lover, but I like dogs as well!
Now I know that many places DON'T like dogs, and in their minds they have good reason. Still, I do believe that sometimes the folks in charge go a little too far in forcing the issue!
However, it's probably easy for me to be judgemental as I don't have to live there! See if you agree with the rules that are now in place!
Chinese City Bans Dogs, Telling Owners To Turn Them In
Officials in Jiangmen, China, are banning residents from keeping dogs, in a move that will take effect at the end of August, according to Chinese media. In one week, owners can begin taking their dogs to drop-off centers, where they will be either adopted by residents of rural areas or euthanized.
The ban targets dogs in densely populated sections of Jiangmen, a city with a population of 3.8 million. Any owners who wish to keep their dogs must apply for a license, reports China Daily.
But it seems that only people who plan to use their dogs to provide security for valuable warehouses or businesses will be granted licenses.
Britain's Daily Mail, citing the Chinese-language newspaper The Jiangmen Daily, reports that "42 residents had died from rabies in the past three years."
The Shanghaiist blog predicts that with the city government's official Notice on Strengthening the Management of Dogs, "we're expecting scores of tearful farewells in the coming weeks."
The story echoes a similar anti-dog incident from 2009, in which fears of rabies led Chinese officials to sanction the killing of dogs in the streets of Hanzhong — apparently going so far as to offer payment for each death.
In Jiangmen, an official explained the new dog ban to China Daily:
"Our aim is not to kill all the dogs in the city's urban areas, but we hope to create a better environment for the city by banning the keeping of dogs," said a police officer, who did not want to be named, on Tuesday.
"And we hope dog owners and residents can understand and cooperate with law enforcement personnel," he added.
That seems like a tough argument to make to dog owners — and at least one resident of the city wasn't swayed:
"That is not fair to the city's dog owners and does not respect life," said Wang Chengzhi, a Jiangmen resident.
"The appropriate departments should introduce detailed regulations to guide residents in keeping dogs and grant them certificates, instead of simply banning dogs," he added.
You know, I'm just thinking that it may not be too far off until something like this takes place here stateside! I hope I'm wrong, but stranger things have happened lately! Some folks are becoming so power hungry that anything is possible! Especially if it furnishes a good smokescreen for something else going on in the background, ya know?
Just thinking out loud here!
How about some fresh coffee on the patio? Only in the 90's right now, but it's early!
Similar things are happening in Denmark at the moment. The state of Denmark has forbidden thirteen different breeds in the country (since criminals like to have them and use them as fighting dogs). Those that have any of them must neuter their dogs or kill them.
ReplyDeleteAlso in some housing associations in Denmark they are now forbidding people to have even more dog breeds or they have to move. I think they added around 40 more breeds, some of them doesn´t make sense at all like the english bulldog that probably is the kindest breed there is!
Thankfully it´s not happening here in Sweden, it is not the dogs fault bad things happens it is the owners fault! Dog license is something that most people are prepared to have over here too but I doubt that would help much to be honest.
One of my dogs is a pitbull (got her from a rescue centre) and if You know how to handle a dog like that they are not worse than any other breed, but she does have a bloody temper to be honest :-) :-) :-)
Have a great day!
Christer.
People without the brains to think - pass laws.
ReplyDeleteThe rights of the many, get taken away because of abuses of the few. Instead those same few should be prosecuted , not the many...
ReplyDeleteIn a way, laws like this are already on the books. In the city of Edinburg Texas, it was announced early last month that residents will be asked to 'contribute' a $50 annual fee for keeping a pet dog. This is supposed to be for helping offset the cost of animal control department needs, which claim they pick up 400 animals per month.
ReplyDeleteNo details on how they intend to enforce this if they animals are kept indoors.

ReplyDeleteI saw puppies being sold off the backs of bicycles in China, and it was onvious they were not for pets! But this is not the way I would like to see population control, even for dogs.
Rabies and feces in the streets and common areas can be a real problem, but proper licensing and neutering could go a long way toward alleviating those maladies.
I'm still a cat lady, even if I have only 1 -

Different country, Different Culture. It is NOT all one big Happy World. Remember China is a communist country, The People are NOT free like the US.
ReplyDeleteHey Christer...
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Denmark had those types of dog laws! Guess that it just goes to show that the world is as crazy in other places as in the states!
At least you live in a more rural area there in Sweden, so most of the laws like these won't affect you, right?
You have a great day, my friend, and thanks for coming by today!
Hey Gorges...
Sometimes it does seem like those types pass most of the laws, doesn't it?
Trying to stay abreast of all this crazy stuff will make you tired mentally! At least it does me!
Thanks for the visit today!
Hey Spud...
Most of the laws seem to be for the majority anymore.
Seems strange to me that the laws deemed important enough always seem to be enforced, while a lot of others are ignored by the PTB! Funny how that works!
Many thanks for coming by today!
Hey Anon 6:25...
Now that certainly has all the markings of a Big Brother Law to me!
Besides, the animal control folks must not be doing too good, if they are picking up 400 dogs a month! You wouldn't think there would be that many dogs in just one town!
Wonder when they will start on the cat control?
Hey, I appreciate you coming over today!
Hey Sis...
Makes you wonder if just using this form of "control" couldn't be passes into law for people at some point! Probably we'll find out before long!
Thanks,"catlady" for coming by today! See you later this month!
Hey Ben...
Guess we should keep that in mind and hope that it stays that way for a little longer!
At least here we can still say what we want, for the most part!
Thanks, buddy, for coming by this morning!
Hermit I faintly remember a similar idea being proposed in San Francisco (I think). There was a bad problem with droppings so the idea was proposed that owners would have to get a permit to have pets, would be limited in the number allowed and said pets would have to be neutered. If you didn't have a permit there would be a huge fine. That was voted down at the final vote due to public displeasure. It's just a matter of time though. Every time a child abuse case makes national news someone proposes people needs classes and a piece of paper (not marriage) to have children. Every time it is proposed there are more people who think it is a good idea. So if folks can gradually accept the idea of a permit for parents why not a permit for dog ownership?
ReplyDeleteHey Stephanie...
ReplyDeleteGood to see you here again!
It does look like if you try and force folks to accept something often enough and long enough, they will eventually accept it!
My old friend, thanks for coming by today!
Have nothing against dogs, just the owners. And the cities, like this one, that doesn't enforce the dog laws. The neighborhood my bro lives in has 100s of barking dogs, day and nite. Now, he hates dogs, lol. I kept calling and complaining long enough they finally did something about the big dogs here, running loose. My bro G shot one once, after it had killed 3 of his goats. Caught in the act. He said the best thing was, it made it home and died in the yard. He had already warned the owner. Then, u get one like my sis has,,love that one. lol
ReplyDeleteYour thinking out loud agrees with my thoughts, also.
ReplyDeleteWhile i didn't see this article, HJ, it's not surprising. I'm not in agreement, but wonder how well enforcement will go.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think it's bad now that I pay my $6 dog license fee. Got away without doing so for about 18 years of dog ownership. Next thing you know the town will remember they have a leash law and start enforcing it.
ReplyDeleteHasn't China ever heard of Rabies Shots?
