Got Beehive...?

When you live in the big city, you almost get used to folks stealing what you have.

Most often, the items stolen are those that can be quickly turned over for cash. Sometimes, though, what they steal makes no sense at all...at least for the thieves!

Still, for someone that knows the true value, this was a good score!

Beehive stolen from outside Houston restaurant

HOUSTON (AP) - Some thieves might truly have sticky fingers after a 500-pound beehive was swiped from a garden outside a Houston restaurant.
Houston police spokesman Victor Senties said Tuesday that nobody has been arrested.

Surveillance security video shows a truck pulling up before dawn Saturday near the Haven Restaurant. Authorities believe at least two people loaded the box-style hive into the vehicle and drove away.

Chef Randy Evans says the thieves apparently knew what they were doing by taking the hive during rainy, chilly weather. He says bees are usually inactive during such conditions.

Evans says about 5,000 bees lived in the hive, worth an estimated $1,000. Honey made by the bees is used in some restaurant dishes, plus the insects help pollinate the garden.

One more example of what we can always look forward to in the sewer we call Houston! Someday...someday!

Coffee outside on the patio this morning! All I have to offer on the side is a few cookies, if that's OK?

  1. Wow - I had no idea a bee hive could get so large - or cost so much. Dear H.J., you always find the most interesting tidbits to share. Thanks!

  2. Hey 2 Tramps...
Remember...this is Texas! We often have some big things!

Actually, it isn't really uncommon to see many hives this large. I wish I had one in my backyard!

I'm glad you liked the story this morning!

Thanks, my friend, for coming over this morning!

  3. Commercial honey can be purchased and it really isn't all that expensive, how could a bunch of thugs haul off with that hive, shame shame and more shame on them, the bee's have not done one damn thing to deserve that at all, must be real stupid thieves, they stole from everyone, the resaturant and the land..I thought the people in Texas esp. Houston were smarter than that, guess some boneheads still live in all states, maybe someone who knows what the u know what took it will call the police and let the bee's be safe and happy! It is coming on St. Patricks day afterall and maybe the bee's will get very lucky and someone will have a heart...just saying!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I believe now I've heard it all! Sounds as if the thieves may have had a buyer already in mind or else they are planning to "go green"! Wow, Hermit, what fascinating tidbits you come up with. As for the bees, they will be happy as long as they reside where there is plenty of nectar to gather. Otherwise...they will probably die off. May the power of stings be mighty! ps commercial honey has no comparison with the raw product, in my humble opinion.

  6. Hey Anon 3:03...
Guess that we have more than our share of boneheads! Folks here (some of them) will steal anything just to be stealing!

I sure do appreciate the visit this morning!

    Hey Carolyn...
I hope they are taking them to a good place full of flowers!

I figure they must have known how to handle bees, or else they might get a sting or two!

Thanks for dropping by this morning!

    Hey Linda...
Amazing, isn't it? Just when you think you have heard it all!

I really appreciate you coming by today!

That is so true and so sad at the same time. I too live in Houston and I can hardly wait until the day I can sell my house and never have to return.

I think those crooks already had a buyer.

  12. Thieves like that are one of the most disgusting forms of human life. It's not like someone needed that hive to feed their children.

  13. 5000 thousand bees are not all that many. I once hauled a load of bee's from N.J. to S.D. There must have been a million bees on that load and I could see them dropping off like flies as I drove but when I got there, there was still a bout a million bees on that load.

Bees sure are busy little buggers, and good housekeepers.
