Now This Is "Tough Love"...!

You don't see this very often, and it's a shame that we don't!

In my day, this is exactly the kind of "tough love" that I would expect from my parents in a case like this!

Of course, that was a different time. That was in a day when the rules were well established and the boundaries were clear! I knew that when I screwed up, I would be punished...period!

My parents were not mean, but they insisted on obedience and truthfulness. If I got in trouble at school, I got in trouble again at home! That's the way things were, and I was aware of that from the git-go! If I did wrong, it was on me and I had to face up to it!

Angry mom refuses to bail out teen son accused of car theft

August 2, 2010

BY KIM JANSSEN Staff Reporter kjanssen@suntimes.com

A teenager accused of stealing a pizza delivery guy's car was chewed out by a judge -- and his mom -- Sunday morning in court.

Ravontay Hutchins, 17, allegedly stole the 1996 Acura Integra after the driver left the keys in the ignition and the engine running outside Pompeii, 1531 W. Taylor, at 9:20 p.m. Saturday.

Two cops on a lunch break at the restaurant heard about the theft and quickly put out a description of the stolen car, which the delivery guy was following in another car, police said.

Hutchins and a 14-year-old accomplice were soon arrested after a brief foot chase in the 1300 block of South Albany, prosecutors said.

At a hearing Sunday in Cook County Criminal Court, Hutchins' mother told Judge Peggy Chiampas that Hutchins' father was serving with the military in Iraq and that she'd done everything she could for the boy, who was "spoiled."

When Chiampas set Hutchins' bail at $25,000, his mother told the judge "I've got [the money to bail him out], but he's staying here, locked up!" and stormed from the courtroom.

Chiampas praised her, saying, "I want to know why there's not more parents like this. ... I applaud her for her truthfulness."

As Hutchins was led back to the cells, she told him, "You think about that, while your dad's in Iraq."

In addition to a felony charges of possession of stolen motor vehicle, Hutchins, of the 1200 block of South Throop, also faces a misdemeanor battery charge and several traffic citations.

Maybe if more parents and care givers did this kind of thing, there would be fewer numbers of kids in serious trouble! Time to go back to "do the crime...then do the time!"

Let's have some coffee in the kitchen this morning. I'm too tired to fight the heat!

Hey Catman...
Ya know, they might just be able to teach this young hoodlum some manners, probably with his Mom's permission!

Thanks, buddy, for coming by!

Good for her, HJ!

Nice to see there are still some mothers today with real sand! If her son pays attention now, he'll learn more than just right from wrong and paying the consequences ...he'll learn how to PARENT.

The mother and the judge "may" have just saved that kids life.

Gotta love tough love. Hopefully he'll learn that, If you can't do the time,, Don't do the crime"

If ALL mom's and dad's were like this..... oh man how awesome would that be.

Wait, my mom and dad did do that to me (the oldest of course) but not with Baby brother who is now a drug addict and trying to stay out of jail.

Hey Hermit... I haven't seent he sun in over 30 days. It is now the longest record in the South Central area of Alaska. SEND ME SOME HEAT AND SUN! I have to go hunting next week!

Bubba -

That's exactly what happened to my sweetie - Dad said "Did I help put you in here (jail)?" no "Then I ain't helping get you out!" An overnight in the pokey did him a world of good....many, many years ago, and I think he's turned out rather well.

Kids today are just given everything, and then parents wonder why they are so disrespectful, selfish, and just plain mean...I've seen several myself lately, no names mentioned!

Big hugs - take your vitamins!

Good Morning My Special One
Yes more parents should be like this instead of crying for their poor baby. YUCK And the sad part is his daddy is out there fighting to keep this brat in a free country.

I know a lady that took her young grandson shopping and he started acting up and wouldn't stop, so she slapped him. Someone saw her do this and turned her in to child protection sevices. Don't know what finally came of it, but she couldn't see her grandson for awhile. What is this world coming to?!?!?

If and when he got out I would make him work in that pizza place until everything was paid back. Then I would have the judge sentence him with 1000 community service or go back with the guys in the previous post like Catman said. Thanks for the great info.

Hey WWRWH...
That's one of the most important things to teach children, and a lesson many of them ever learn!

Hard taught lessons are sometimes the ones best learned!

Thanks for coming by today!

Hey Ben...
Let's hope he learns his lesson this time around! Like you say, it may just save his life!

Thanks, buddy, for the visit!

Hey Upinak...
30 days without seeing the sun is a long time! I know you are all looking forwad to some nicer weather!

Good luck on the hunting! Thanks for coming over today...good to see you again!

Hey Sis...
He did seem to turn out pretty well, didn't he? Guess we had the same kind of Dad!

No names needed about the spoiled kids! Seen a few myself!

Catch ya later...and thanks for coming by today!

Hey Sweetie...
Some kids never seem to learn until it's too late!

A little time in the military would do this kid a world of good!

Then again, maybe he is one of those that there is just no hope for! Who knows?

Thanks, my girl, for coming by today!

Hey Dizzy...
It's a shame, but this happens more and more now days! Really sad!

Thanks, buddy, for coming by today!

Hey Mechanic...
Maybe this little lesson will help to save this kid from himself! I certainly hope so!

Makes me tired to even think about all this going on now day!

Thanks for the visit this morning!

Hey Ken...
It's a shame that so little respect is shown for parents this way! Just imagine what he will be like in a couple of years!

Needs to spend a couple of weeks at THIS granny's house!

Thanks for coming by today!

That mother deserves a pat on the back!
I raised my kids in a small town, and they couldn't do one blasted thing without me knowing about it, or without someone taking them to task first and then calling me.
I figured that my job as a parent was to raise polite, responsible, and decent kids - and it paid off.

I once took my 5 year old back to the feed store after finding a dog collar in his jacket pocket, and let Mrs Spence raise holy hell on him - as well as call the sheriff.(the sheriff was her son, and a family friend) All was fun and games until the 5 yr old found himself in cuffs and being escorted to the patrol car, where he promptly peed his pants.
We never had another incident - and I can say that I ended up with 3 kids that I'm extremely proud of!

From the movie Liar Liar:

Greta: He knocked over another ATM. This time at knife point. He needs your legal advice.
Fletcher: [picking up phone and shouting] Stop breaking the law, asshole!

Hey Sue...
I know exactly what you mean about that! Fear of punishment is what helped to keep me straight when I was young!

Hey, I appreciate you coming by today!

From the story...

I have to wonder who spoiled him?
It must have been a joint effort, mom & dad.
"You reap what you sow" comes to mind.
Now she has a change of heart or has reality set in? I dunno.
