Now This Plan Makes Sense...

My friend and fellow blogger, Blondie, sent me this little bit of information and I thought it was important enough to share with you...it just makes perfect sense to me! Thanks, Blondie!

When a company falls on difficult times, one of the things that seems to happen is they reduce their staff and workers The remaining workers need to find ways to continue to do a good job or risk that their job would be eliminated as well. Wall street, and the media normally congratulate the CEO for making this type of "tough decision", and his board of directors gives him a big bonus.

Our government should not be immune from similar risks.

Therefore: Reduce the House of Representatives from the current 435 members to 218 members and Senate members from 100 to 50(one per State). Also reduce remaining staff by
25%.

Accomplish this over the next 8 years,(two steps / two elections) and of course this would require some redistricting.

Some Yearly Monetary Gains Include:

$44,108,400 for elimination of base pay for congress. (267 members X $165,200 pay / member / yr.)

$97,175,000 for elimination of the above people's staff. (estimate $1.3 Million in staff per each member of the House, and $3 Million in staff per each member of the Senate every year)

$240,294 for the reduction in remaining staff by 25%.

$7,500,000,000 reduction in pork barrel ear-marks each year. (those members whose jobs are gone. Current estimates for total government pork earmarks are at $15 Billion / yr)

The remaining representatives would need to work smarter and would need to prove efficiencies. It might even be in their best interests to work together for the good of our
country.

We may also expect that smaller committees might lead to a more efficient resolution of issues as well. It might even be easier to keep track of what your representative is doing.

Congress has more tools available to do their jobs than it had back in 1911 when the current number of representatives was established. (telephone, computers, cell phones to name a few)

Note: Congress did not hesitate to head home when it was a holiday, when the nation needed a real fix to the economic problems. Also, we have 3 senators that have not been doing their jobs for the past 18+ months (on the campaign trail) and still they all have been accepting full pay. These facts alone support a reduction in senators & congress.

Summary of opportunity:

$ 44,108,400 reduction of congress members.

$282,100, 000 for elimination of the reduced house member staff.

$150,000,000 for elimination of reduced senate member staff.

$59,675,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining house members.

$37,500,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining senate members.

$7,500,000,000 reduction in pork added to bills by 0ther reduction of congress members.

$8,073,383,400 per year, estimated total savings. (that's 8 BILLION just to start!)

Big business does these types of cuts all the time.

If Congresspersons were required to serve 20, 25 or 30 years (like everyone else) in order to collect retirement benefits there is no telling how much we would save. Now they get full retirement after serving only ONE term.

Now, if you don't mind...I suggest we get a fresh cup of coffee, my friend!.

Just cancel the pensions and see how quickly the ship gets jumped. Or enact means testing for their medical & future SS (like they are floating around for the common man) - should work just as well. After all, why collect if you don't need it?

WHOA THERE!!! Think about representation! There's a reason the Congress was set up this way. If you want to save money, make the salaries equivalent to the median income of the constituents, and all raises voted on by the constituents. If our representatives don't do a good job for us then have a recall election and vote someone else in. Otherwise--GET A ROPE!!! Want to save on the pork barrel? Make everybody else but the sponsors and who it benerfits vote on it.

You bet your sweet bippy I'd vote for that!

Sure, representation is a biggie...but what are two doing that one can't. Give the States back the power that they were originally intended to have (rather make them take it back instead of letting Big Daddy make all the decisions for them) and there would be a lot less need for so many 'representatives' in D.C. This is a union of States after all even if it hasn't acted like one in decades.

Hey Ken...good to see ya again, my man. One filled thermos, coming up!

Yeah, dreaming is about as close to something like this that we will ever get. Hey, thanks for taking the time to visit, my friend!

Hey Stephanie...the means test is a really good idea, I think! I mean, I have to do it for the V.A. so why don't they do it? Good one, Steph...

Hey I appreciate you dropping by!

Hey OldFurt...I like the idea of voting for the raises...as for the salary thing, I'm sure that most of them couldn't or wouldn't live on what their constituents do.

Thanks for coming by!

Hey Mamma...you make some very valid points, and we really should start acting like Independent states working together again...no doubt!

Bet your bippy? I haven't heard that one since "Laugh In" was on...

Thanks for stopping by!

I think that's a great idea, my friend! I'm proud to be linked to you and have already signed up as a follower! The more folks we have blogging, the better our discussions will be reguarding ALL things...IMHO.

Damn Hermit, stop making sense! Ha ha! "Representation" be damned, we ain't "represented" anyways.... Might as well get rid of some of those useless leaches. Hell, let's get rid of all of 'em!

Me?? Make sense?? Boy, you would certainly get a lot of nays on THAT one!

Actually when my friend, Blondie, sent it to me and I read it...it made sense in a rather general way!

It would be nice to see some of these guys work for their money and perks, like most of us do.

Hey thanks for coming by, my friend!

They definitely need some kind of reality check up there on the hill. They should be happy to accept this plan. It would be a much easier reality check for them than the other options brewing...

HermitJim said...

hey Chris...there-in lies the rub, doesn't it? They don't want to have anyone digging into their pockets, like they do to us. But I guess we can dream!

Thanks for coming by!

Hey Maitreya...need a dose of something...but I'm afraid that they don't want to face up to reality. They live in a fanyasy world created by themselves, and funded by us.

Time will tell if they see the writing on the wall soon enough!

Thanks for the visit!
